Running out of data in the middle of nowhere is one of those travel problems that sounds trivial until it actually happens to you. You're trying to pull up directions to your accommodation, your kids are asking if Google Maps is "broken again," and your Holafly plan just hit zero. We've been there. More than once.

That's exactly the problem Holafly Always On was built to solve — and it costs you nothing extra.

If you're already on a [Holafly Plans subscription](https://holafly.sjv.io/je0BNM?ref=adamandlinds.com), Always On is included automatically. It's a background safety net that activates the moment your main plan ends, giving you 1GB of free data every month in 76 countries. No settings to adjust, no button to press, no top-up to buy.

![Always On keeps you connected even when your main plan runs out.](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1512499617640-c74ae3a79d37?w=1200&auto=format&fit=crop)

## What Holafly Always On Actually Is

Always On is a feature exclusive to Holafly's monthly and yearly subscription plans — the [Light Plan at $49.90/month (25GB)](https://holafly.sjv.io/je0BNM?ref=adamandlinds.com) and the [Unlimited Plan at $64.90/month](https://holafly.sjv.io/je0BNM?ref=adamandlinds.com). It is not available on standard prepaid day eSIMs.

When your billing cycle ends, your eSIM doesn't go dark. Instead, Always On kicks in automatically within a few hours and provides 1GB of data per month at no additional cost. That gigabyte renews each month as long as your eSIM remains installed on your device. Even if you cancel your subscription entirely, the benefit stays active — your eSIM just needs to stay installed.

Think of it less like a plan and more like a permanent backup signal. It's not designed for heavy use — streaming and video calls will chew through 1GB quickly. But for the moments that actually matter when you're traveling, it's more than enough: loading Google Maps, sending a WhatsApp message, checking your booking confirmation, or hopping into the Holafly app to buy a new plan right from wherever you're standing.

## Why This Matters for Real Travelers

We travel full-time with three kids. Connectivity isn't a nice-to-have — it's how we navigate cities we've never been to, how the kids do school, how Lindsay runs her travel advisory work. When data runs out at an inconvenient moment (and it always does at an inconvenient moment), the fallback options are usually: find free WiFi, beg a café for their password, or just stand there being annoyed.

Always On removes that scenario entirely. We've had Holafly Plans running through Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, and most recently here in Osaka during cherry blossom season — and knowing there's a baseline gigabyte of backup data sitting there in the background is genuinely useful peace of mind. Even in the rare event the main plan lapses before a renewal goes through, the eSIM stays live.

For digital nomads, long-term travelers, and families who move between countries regularly, it's the kind of feature that makes a subscription feel genuinely worthwhile.

## Where Always On Works

It's worth noting that your main Holafly Plans subscription may cover more than 160 destinations — Always On doesn't match that full footprint, but it covers all the major destinations most travelers actually visit.

## The Holafly Plans That Include Always On

Always On is built into both Holafly subscription tiers. Here's how they compare:

Light Plan

### $49.90/month

25GB across 160+ destinations

Always On included. Good for moderate data users.

Unlimited Plan

### $64.90/month

Unlimited data across 160+ destinations

Always On included. Unlimited hotspot. What we run on all our devices.

For anyone traveling for more than 30 days — which describes most people reading this blog — the monthly plans are substantially better value than stacking individual day plans. You can [check out Holafly Plans here](https://holafly.sjv.io/je0BNM?ref=adamandlinds.com) and use code **ADAMANDLINDS** at checkout to save 5% (and on subsequent renewals, that stacks with Holafly's annual discount for closer to 30% total savings).

For destination-specific eSIMs on shorter trips, [the general Holafly link](https://holafly.sjv.io/YR0VrR?ref=adamandlinds.com) applies and code **ADAMANDLINDS** works there too.

We reviewed Holafly in detail on our YouTube channel. Worth a watch if you're on the fence about whether it's the right eSIM for your trip.

## How Always On Activates (and How to Keep It)

There's no setup required on your end. Always On switches on automatically a few hours after your billing cycle ends. It does not activate the instant you cancel or pause — there's a short delay, so don't expect it to be instantaneous.

To keep the benefit running, a few conditions apply:

- Keep the Holafly eSIM installed on your device, even if you cancel your subscription. Deleting the eSIM kills the benefit permanently.
- Use the eSIM at least once every 12 months. Holafly may pause the monthly allowance if the eSIM sits completely dormant.
- Don't transfer the eSIM to another device — Holafly Plans subscriptions don't support transfers yet, and attempting one can delete the plan.

If you need to switch to your physical SIM or another eSIM, just disable Holafly's data in your phone settings. That keeps the eSIM installed and Always On ready to go when you need it.

## What You Can Actually Do With 1GB Per Month

One gigabyte isn't a lot by the standards of an active travel day — don't expect to stream anything meaningful or make video calls without chewing through it quickly. But it covers the essentials well: Google Maps navigation, WhatsApp and iMessage, email and basic browsing, checking booking confirmations, and opening the Holafly app to purchase a new plan.

That last point is particularly useful. If your plan expires and you're trying to sort out a new one, Always On ensures you can actually access Holafly's app or website to do it — without having to find WiFi first.

Hotspot sharing is technically supported, but 1GB will disappear fast if you're tethering other devices. Save it for emergencies.

## When Always On Rolls Out

Always On became available for all subscriptions activated from November 4, 2025 onwards. Holafly has confirmed it will eventually extend to all monthly and yearly plans regardless of when they were originally activated — so if your plan predates that, it's coming.

For anyone setting up a new Holafly Plans subscription now, Always On is included from day one.

## Frequently Asked Questions About Holafly Always On

### Does Always On cost anything?

No. It's included at no extra charge with all Holafly Plans subscriptions (Light and Unlimited) activated from November 4, 2025.

### Does the 1GB roll over if I don't use it?

No. Unused data doesn't carry over to the next month. It resets each billing cycle.

Always On stays active as long as the eSIM remains installed on your device. You don't need an active subscription to keep the benefit. Just don't delete the eSIM.

### Can I use Always On for hotspot?

### Does Always On work in every country my main plan covers?

No. It works in 76 selected countries, not the full 160+ that Holafly Plans covers. Check the coverage list before relying on it in less common destinations.
