We spent two weeks in Taipei in July 2024 with our three daughters, exploring the city neighbourhood by neighbourhood, riding the MRT more times than we can count, and eating our weight in xiaolongbao. Taipei is one of those cities that makes accommodation choice genuinely interesting because different neighbourhoods feel like completely different cities. Where you stay shapes your whole experience.

Understanding Taipei's Neighbourhoods

Taipei's MRT system is so good that location matters less here than in most cities. You can stay almost anywhere on the network and reach the major sights within 20-30 minutes. That said, there are four main areas most visitors should consider, each with a different character.

Zhongzheng (Taipei Main Station area) is the transport hub of the city. Every major rail and MRT line passes through here, there is a direct airport MRT connection, and accommodation ranges from budget to business class. If you are visiting Taipei for the first time, this is the lowest-friction base to operate from.

Ximending sits just west of Taipei Main Station and is Taipei's youth culture epicentre. It is dense with street food, shopping, indie cinemas, and the kind of neon energy that makes it fun to wander at night. It is brilliant for older kids and teenagers, slightly chaotic for young families with strollers.

Da'an District is where you find Taipei's best restaurants, a calmer residential feel, Daan Forest Park, and easy access to Yongkang Street, which is arguably the best eating street in the city. It is quieter than the centre but still well connected.

Xinyi is the upscale district around Taipei 101. Hotels here are more expensive, but if a view of 101 matters to you, the area has a slick, modern feel that some travellers love.

If this is your first time in Taipei, staying near the Main Station is the move that makes the most logistical sense. The airport MRT drops you right here from Taoyuan International Airport, every metro line connects through this hub, and there is a direct HSR connection for day trips south. You can be at Jiufen, Yehliu, or the National Palace Museum without a single taxi.

Best Hotels in Ximending

Ximending is a neighbourhood that either delights or slightly overwhelms, depending on who you are. For our family, it was mostly delight. The girls loved the energy, the street food is incredible, and the walkability is excellent once you are actually in the neighbourhood. The slight catch is that the streets are busy and it can be noisy at night, so lighter sleepers should look for hotels with good soundproofing.

WESTGATE Hotel is consistently one of the best value options in this area. It is stylish, well-run, and close enough to Ximending's main pedestrian zone without being directly in the loudest part. Amba Hotel is the name that comes up consistently when well-travelled people talk about Taipei accommodation. What We'd Do Differently on Accommodation

When we were in Taipei in July 2024, we were further east than we needed to be for our first few days, which meant more MRT time than necessary to reach Ximending and the Main Station area. If we were going back, we would base ourselves in Zhongzheng or Ximending from day one and save the Da'an neighbourhood exploration for a potential longer stay.

The other thing we learned the hard way: July is hot. Really hot. Humid, relentless, 35-degree hot. Air conditioning quality in your room matters more than almost any other factor.
