We've been to Universal Studios Japan four times now across our various Japan stints, and each time we find ourselves re-answering the same questions from other families: Is the Klook ticket the same as buying at the gate? Do you actually need Express Pass? Is Super Nintendo World worth the extra cost? This guide answers all of it, based on real visits including our most recent trip in March 2026 when we took Lily, Cora, and Harper for what was supposed to be a quick day out. It was not quick.
We're currently based in Osaka during cherry blossom season, which means USJ is essentially our backyard. We've ridden the rides, navigated the queues, tested the timing strategies, and we buy our tickets through Klook every single time using code ADAMANDLINDSKLOOK. Here's everything you need to know.
Use at checkout on Klook to save on USJ tickets and Express Passes. Also works on hotels, transfers, and activities worldwide.
Why Buy USJ Tickets on Klook Instead of the Gate
The short answer: you save money, skip the ticket queue, and get QR code entry on your phone. The Klook Studio Pass is accepted at every USJ turnstile and is not a voucher you exchange somewhere. It is a QR code that scans directly at the gate. On the days we've visited, the ticket queue at the gate has been 20-40 minutes long before you even get inside the park. With a Klook ticket, you walk straight to the turnstile.
Current Klook pricing for USJ Studio Pass tickets runs from around $86 USD for adults and $71 USD for children, competitive with gate pricing. Adding code ADAMANDLINDSKLOOK at checkout brings additional savings on top. Klook also frequently runs bundle deals pairing the Studio Pass with Express Pass options, which is worth checking before buying either separately.
Beyond tickets, the same code works on the Osaka Amazing Pass, Osaka Metro Pass, and everything else you'll book in Japan. We cover the full picture in our Klook discount code guide for Japan theme parks.
USJ Studio Pass: What Is and Is Not Included
The USJ Studio Pass on Klook gives you full-day park entry. What it does not include: Express Pass, timed-entry tickets for Harry Potter, or separately ticketed seasonal events.
| What | In Studio Pass? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Park Entry | Yes | Full day, all standard attractions |
| Super Nintendo World | Yes (timed entry) | Book via USJ app from 8am on the day |
| Harry Potter Area | Yes (may need timed entry) | Timed entry required on busy days |
| Express Pass | No | Separate purchase to skip ride queues |
| Shows and Parades | Yes | Seasonal, check USJ app for schedule |
Do You Need the USJ Express Pass?
It depends on when you're going and how much the kids can handle waiting. On a weekday in early November we got through most of the park without it. On a Saturday in March during cherry blossom season, queues for the major rides were hitting 90-120 minutes. The USJ Express Pass on Klook starts from around $62 USD per person and gives you priority access to 3-7 attractions depending on which tier you choose. The tiers don't all cover the same rides, so read the details before buying.
Our recommendation for families: if you're visiting on a weekend, during school holidays, or in spring or autumn peak season, get the Express Pass. The time you save on just 2-3 rides with young kids easily justifies the cost. One confirmed thing: Express Pass sells out before the gate opens on peak days. Buy on Klook in advance.
Super Nintendo World: The Honest Family Verdict
Super Nintendo World is genuinely spectacular. We've watched all three kids lose their minds inside it, and even as adults who have seen a lot of theme parks across 33+ countries, the level of detail is something else. The Mario Kart ride is worth going out of your way for. Power-Up Bands cost extra and aren't mandatory, but our kids will not forgive us for mentioning that.
The practical tip: book your Super Nintendo World timed entry the moment the USJ app opens, usually 8am on day-of. It fills fast on busy days. We missed out our first visit and had to wait standby for over an hour. Second time we set an alarm. Get the timed entry, then do other parts of the park while you wait for your slot.
Getting to USJ from Osaka
From most parts of central Osaka, USJ is 15-30 minutes by train. The most direct route is via the JR Yumesaki Line from Osaka (Umeda) or Nishikujo stations to Universal City station, five minutes walk from the gates. The JR line to USJ is separate from the Osaka Metro network, so a metro day pass does not cover it. From the station, the crowds will guide you regardless.
If you're doing multiple Osaka attractions on the same trip, check the Klook Pass Kansai, which covers TeamLab Botanical Garden Osaka, Umeda Sky Building, the HARUKA airport express, and more.
Our Recommended USJ Day Plan for Families
- Arrive at park open. Have Klook QR code ready on your phone before you join the turnstile line.
- Go directly to Super Nintendo World if your timed slot is early, or head to the most popular ride first while queues are short.
- Use the USJ app for live wait times throughout the day.
- Minion Park and the Hello Kitty area are best mid-day when crowds thin at the bigger rides.
- Schedule a rest break around 1-2pm. The park hits peak congestion then and small humans need food.
- Evening light shows and parades are worth staying for if the kids can last.
We budget around 10,000-15,000 yen per person all-in for a USJ day including entry, food, and one or two small purchases. With three kids this adds up, so every saving on the ticket purchase matters. Book via the link below and add code ADAMANDLINDSKLOOK at checkout.
