SafetyWing sells an electronics theft benefit as an add-on to Nomad Insurance Essential, and we have a code that makes the first eight weeks of it free. Before you use it, it is worth understanding what the add-on actually pays out, because the number is smaller than most people assume and it shrinks every month you own the device.

We have carried five phones, three iPads, two laptops, and a camera rig through 33 countries since 2022 without having any of it stolen. That is luck as much as anything, and it is also the reason we can look at this add-on without a horror story clouding the maths.

What the code gets you

ADAMANDLINDS8 gives you eight weeks of the Electronics Theft add-on at no cost on a new Nomad Insurance Essential plan. The reward applies to subscription plans on either the 28-day or the annual billing cycle, and it does not apply to the Complete plan.

There are two eligibility rules worth reading twice. You must never have held a SafetyWing account before, and existing members cannot cancel and re-register to qualify. The reward also has to be applied before your account exists, which brings us to the genuinely odd part of the process.

How to claim it, including the pink camera

This is not a checkout code. There is no box at the payment screen where you paste it in, and if you go looking for one you will finish the signup without the reward and have no way to add it afterwards.

  1. Open the Nomad Insurance page while logged out

The reward will not apply if you are signed in to an existing SafetyWing account. Use a private window if you are not sure.

  2. Find the pink camera and click it

There is a pink camera on the Nomad Insurance landing page. Clicking it opens the reward pop-up. This is the only route in.

  3. Enter ADAMANDLINDS8 in the pop-up

Do this before you start creating your account. A reward can only be applied ahead of account creation.

  4. Select Essential with the electronics theft add-on

Choose the Essential plan on a 28-day or annual subscription and tick the Electronics Theft add-on during the purchase flow.

Start with the reward applied

After the eight free weeks the add-on renews as a normal paid benefit, so it is not a permanently free extra. If you pay for an annual plan you still pay the full amount up front, and the cost of two months of the add-on is deducted from your total.

What SafetyWing counts as electronics

The covered list is specific, and anything not named on it is not covered. As of the plan version effective February 2026 it runs to laptops, cameras and lenses, smartphones, tablets and iPads, e-readers, music players, earphones and AirPods, headphones, smartwatches, drones, portable wi-fi devices, and portable gaming devices including a computer mouse.

The additions in the current version matter for anyone travelling with kids. Headphones and smartwatches were not on the older list, and between the girls we are moving four sets of headphones through airports at any given time.

What it actually pays out

Here is the part almost nobody explains. The benefit is capped at $1,000 per item, $3,000 per insurance period, and $6,000 over the lifetime of your membership. Those caps are the ceiling, not the payout.

The payout itself runs through a 50-month straight-line depreciation rule. Your device loses 2% of its purchase value every month from the original purchase date, and once an item is 50 months old it has no remaining reimbursement value at all. Reimbursement is based on that depreciated figure, then capped at $1,000.

Device and purchase priceAge when stolenValue remainingYou get
$1,200 laptop6 months88%, or $1,056$1,000 (capped)
$1,600 laptop18 months64%, or $1,024$1,000 (capped)
$2,400 laptop36 months28%, or $672$672
$1,100 tablet44 months12%, or $132$132
Any device50 months or more0%Nothing

The practical reading of that table is that this add-on protects new gear well and old gear barely at all. A four-year-old MacBook is worth almost nothing under this policy no matter what you paid for it, and if your working setup is a laptop you bought in 2021 then the add-on is not doing much for you.

Keep the receipts. Reimbursement requires proof of ownership such as a purchase receipt, and the depreciation calculation runs from the original purchase date, so a claim without a dated receipt is going to be a difficult conversation.

The conditions that void a claim

Theft has to be reported to the police within 24 hours, and you need the written police report as proof. In a country where you do not speak the language, on the day your laptop went missing, that is a real errand rather than a formality, and 24 hours goes quickly.

SafetyWing also requires that you took reasonable care to protect the items. Damage and loss are not covered at all, so a phone that goes into a canal or an iPad left in a taxi falls outside this benefit entirely. It pays for theft and nothing else.

You have to select it at purchase

The add-on must be chosen during the original purchase. If you decide later that you want it, the only route is to cancel your existing plan and buy a new one with the add-on included.

Cancelling and rebuying has a consequence that is easy to miss. Any medical conditions you have developed while insured will be treated as pre-existing on the new plan and excluded from it. If you have had anything treated since you signed up, restarting a policy to add electronics coverage could cost you far more than the gear is worth.

Lost luggage is a separate thing

People conflate these two benefits and they are not the same. Nomad Insurance Essential already includes lost checked luggage cover at $500 per item and $3,000 maximum per plan, and that applies when an airline loses your bag rather than when a person takes your things.

The electronics theft add-on is for theft specifically, with its own caps and its own police report requirement. Having one does not give you the other.

Vilnius station, January 2026. Transit days are when a family's gear is most exposed, all of it in one pile, everyone tired, nobody counting.

Whether we would pay for it

Our answer depends entirely on how new the gear is. The camera body and the laptop we edit on are recent enough that the depreciated value would still hit the $1,000 cap, which makes the add-on worth its monthly cost to us. The kids' iPads are old enough that a claim would return pocket change.

If you are leaving on a long trip with equipment you bought in the last year or two, the free eight weeks costs you nothing to try and the ongoing price is modest against a $1,000 payout. If your bag is full of hand-me-down devices from 2021, read the depreciation table again before you commit to paying for this every month.

FAQ

SafetyWing electronics theft questions

Can I use ADAMANDLINDS8 if I already have a SafetyWing account?

No. The reward is for people who have never held a SafetyWing account, and existing members cannot cancel and sign up again to qualify. It also will not apply if you are logged in when you try to redeem it.

Where is the pink camera?

On the Nomad Insurance landing page. Clicking it opens a pop-up where you enter the reward code. This has to happen before you create your account, because a reward cannot be applied afterwards.

How much does SafetyWing pay for a stolen laptop?

Up to $1,000 per item, but the actual figure is the purchase price minus 2% for every month since you bought it. A laptop bought 36 months ago for $2,400 would return about $672. Anything 50 months or older returns nothing.

Does it cover a phone I dropped or lost?

No. Damage and loss without theft are excluded. The benefit pays out only when an item is stolen and you have filed a police report within 24 hours.

Can I add electronics theft cover to a plan I already bought?

Not directly. You would need to cancel your current plan and purchase a new one with the add-on selected, and any medical conditions that arose during the first plan would then count as pre-existing and be excluded.

What happens after the eight free weeks?

The add-on renews automatically as a paid benefit at the standard rate. On an annual plan you pay the full amount up front and the cost of two months of the add-on is deducted from your total.

Are my kids' headphones covered?

Headphones, earphones, and AirPods are on the covered list in the current plan version, as are smartwatches and portable gaming devices. Each is subject to the same per-item cap and the same depreciation rule.
