Best eSIM for multi-country East Asia: Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and Macau (2026)

Most eSIM guides pretend East Asia is one region. It isn't. Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan run on open, full-speed networks that basically any provider handles. Mainland China runs behind the Great Firewall on its own carriers. Hong Kong and Macau sit outside that firewall but still on their own local operators. If your trip crosses two or three of those borders in a week, buying the wrong plan is how you end up airport-shopping for a physical SIM at 11pm with three tired kids.

What we actually tested, country by country

Japan. Holafly runs on NTT Docomo domestically, which is genuinely the network you want in Japan. We've had full signal on the Shinkansen between Osaka and Tokyo, in Uji tea fields, on the Fukuoka waterfront, and up in Nara. Not once did we drop long enough to notice on Google Maps.

South Korea. Two weeks in Seoul in July 2023 during a heatwave that turned into non-stop rain. Taiwan. Thirteen days across Taipei and the north in July 2024. Coverage in Taipei and along the west coast HSR corridor was strong. In Fuxing Village and up around New Taipei things stayed reliable. We didn't get out to Taroko Gorge on that trip, so we can't speak to remote east-coast performance directly.

Hong Kong. Nine days in February 2025, mostly Disneyland with the kids and MTR-hopping around the harbor. Data held up in tunnels, on the ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui, and inside Disneyland where a lot of visitors otherwise report congestion issues.

Mainland China. Eight days in Shanghai on the 240-hour transit visa in September 2025. This is the important one.
