We have been to Italy twice as a family. The first time was a month in the summer of 2022, based in Genoa, then Lucca, then Naples. The second was Rome, Florence and Milan in the summer of 2021, as a test run of our ability to make full time travel work. Both trips taught us the same thing about staying connected: the data has to work the moment you step off the train, because in Italy you are almost always about to get on another one.

How the ADAMANDLINDS code worksOur Italy trips, and what we actually needed data for
In 2022 we spent eight days in Genoa, eleven in Lucca, and ten in Naples. Lucca is where we stopped moving for a while. Harper turned three inside the walls on June 25, we hit our tenth wedding anniversary that same week, and the morning after the birthday we drove out to ride horses in the hills, in full body armour, in heat that made us cut the ride fifteen minutes short. The old town is a knot of alleys with over a hundred towers hidden between the buildings, and the only way we found anything was with a map open on a phone.

The train did most of the heavy lifting. We took a day trip from Genoa to Milan, ran the intercity line into Lucca, hopped over to Pisa for an afternoon, and finished with the Frecciarossa in business class down to Naples. Every one of those legs meant checking Trenitalia and Italo apps, tracking platforms that change at the last minute, and keeping three kids fed on the idea that the next stop was coming. In Naples we did a pizza cooking class in the city that invented it and a food tour through the old centre, both booked and confirmed on the phone the day before.

Italy eSIM plans and pricing
These are the Italy prices we pulled from Holafly's own checkout on August 2, 2026. Every plan is unlimited data on 5G where available, 4G, and LTE, with no cap to watch. We update this table in place when the price moves rather than posting a new one.
| Days | Price (USD) | Per day | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | $11.90 | $3.97 | A long weekend in one city |
| 5 days | $20.50 | $4.10 | Rome plus a day trip |
| 7 days | $27.50 | $3.93 | A classic Italy week |
| 10 days | $36.50 | $3.65 | Two or three cities |
| 15 days | $50.50 | $3.37 | A two-week trip |
| 30 days | $73.90 | $2.46 | A slow month like our 2022 one |
Each Italy plan also carries two things worth knowing. Data sharing lets you turn the phone into a hotspot at 1GB per day, so a 7-day plan gives you 7GB to share across the family's other devices. And Always On leaves 1GB a month running in 150+ countries even after the plan ends, checked on Holafly's site on August 2, 2026, so a lapsed eSIM still lands you somewhere with something rather than nothing.

Networks and coverage in Italy
The Italy eSIM runs on Vodafone Italy and WINDTRE, confirmed on Holafly's Italy page on August 2, 2026. In practice that meant a steady 4G and LTE signal through Genoa, Lucca, Pisa, Milan, and Naples, and it held on the Frecciarossa the whole way south, which is the moment you most want to be able to look up where you are actually going. 5G shows up where the local network has built it out, mostly in the bigger cities.

Where it thins out is the same place any Italian network thins out. Deep in the hills around Lucca, on rural stretches, and up in the mountains, the signal drops. For everything most travellers do, walking cities and moving between them by train, it was not a problem we ran into.
Italy eSIM or the Europe eSIM?
This is the decision that actually matters, and as of August 2, 2026 the answer changed. Holafly now prices the Italy eSIM exactly the same as the regional Europe eSIM, tier for tier, right up to $73.90 for 30 days. The Europe plan covers 33 countries. The Italy plan covers one. When the price is identical, the only reason to pick Italy-only is certainty that you will not cross a single border.
| Italy eSIM | Europe eSIM | |
|---|---|---|
| Countries | Italy only | 33 countries |
| 30-day price | $73.90 | $73.90 |
| Data | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Best for | Italy and nowhere else | Any trip that crosses a border |
On our 2021 loop we were in Rome and Milan for a week. One Europe eSIM carried all of it. If your Italy trip has any chance of a hop to France, Croatia, or a Mediterranean neighbour, buy the Europe plan and stop thinking about it.

Italy eSIM or a local Italian SIM
A local SIM from TIM, Vodafone, or WINDTRE will look cheaper on the shelf. Then you factor in finding a store that is open, the passport they need to register it, the Italian-only paperwork, and a number you throw away at the airport on the way out. For a two-week trip, Holafly's 15-day plan at $50.50 comes in competitive with all of that and skips every step of it. The eSIM is live before you leave home, which on a travel day with kids is worth more than the price gap.
Is your phone compatible?
Most phones from the last several years handle eSIM. As a rule, iPhones from the XS onward and Android flagships from 2019 onward work, including the Samsung Galaxy S line and Google Pixel. If you are not sure, check for an Add eSIM option in your settings, or run your model through the checker on Holafly's site before you pay.
Our honest take
We have done Italy two ways, a slow family month and a fast multi-country loop, and the eSIM mattered more on the fast one. For a single Italy trip, buy the plan that matches the days, and if there is any chance of crossing a border, take the Europe eSIM because it now costs the same. The one thing we would not do is land in Rome at eleven at night and go looking for a SIM shop with two suitcases and a jet-lagged family, which is exactly the trip we were trying to avoid when we started using these.

Yes. The Holafly eSIM is data only. Your physical SIM stays in the phone, so calls and verification texts still arrive on your usual number, and you make calls through WhatsApp or FaceTime.
