Japan is our favourite country in the world. That's not a throwaway opener — we've now spent over 220 days here across multiple trips, cities, and seasons, and the feeling of landing at Narita or Kansai still hasn't worn off. So when people ask us which eSIM to use for Japan, we take the question seriously. We've tested options across Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Hakone, and everywhere in between. Here's what we actually use, and why.

Why your eSIM choice actually matters in Japan

Japan is one of the most connected countries on earth, with 5G coverage blanketing most urban areas and 4G LTE reaching deep into the countryside. But that excellent infrastructure only helps you if your eSIM is riding the right network. A bad eSIM here means you're standing in Dotonbori trying to find a restaurant on a spinning loading screen, or navigating the Tokyo Metro offline because you blew through your data cap by day two. Japan rewards you for being connected — translation apps, Google Maps, real-time transit info, finding that ramen shop without an English sign — all of it depends on data you can rely on.

We've also found that Japan has a quirk most people don't anticipate: you use more data here than almost anywhere else. The transit apps, Google Lens translating every menu, the kids watching YouTube on the Shinkansen — it adds up fast. That's why we always lean toward unlimited plans for Japan specifically.

Our recommendation: Holafly Japan eSIM

We've been using Holafly's Japan eSIM since our first trip in late 2022, and it's the one we keep coming back to. The big reason is simple: unlimited data. In Japan particularly, not having to think about how much data you've used is worth the price difference over capped alternatives. What to look for in a Japan eSIM

Not all eSIMs are equal in Japan. Network compatibility is the first thing to check — Japan runs on NTT Docomo, SoftBank, and au (KDDI), and the best eSIMs connect through at least one of these. Holafly routes through the major networks, which is why coverage is solid even outside the big cities. We've had good signal in places like Shirakawa-go and rural Kyushu where you might expect to drop out.

The second thing is hotspot support. Holafly's Japan plan allows 500MB per day of hotspot sharing — useful for connecting a tablet or laptop, though not unlimited. If you need unrestricted tethering for remote work, the Holafly Plans subscription unlocks unlimited hotspot. Third: make sure your phone supports eSIM. Almost all iPhones from the XS onwards, and most flagship Android phones from the last four years, do. Holafly has a compatibility checker on their site if you're unsure.

How to set up your Holafly Japan eSIM

After purchasing, Holafly sends a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone's Settings (Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM on iPhone, or Settings > Connections > SIM Manager on Android), give the plan a name, and you're done. Don't activate data roaming on the eSIM until you land in Japan — switch it on at the airport and you've got internet before you've found the luggage carousel. We usually do this step while waiting for the kids to find their bags.

Install the eSIM before you leave home, while you're on WiFi. The QR scan and installation needs an internet connection — you can't do it on the plane. This catches people out more often than it should.

Alternatives worth knowing about

Since we have an exclusivity deal with Holafly through August 2026, we won't be recommending other eSIM brands here — but there's one Japan-specific option worth mentioning for anyone needing to connect multiple devices simultaneously. Japan Wireless offers pocket WiFi rental, which works differently from an eSIM — it's a physical device that creates its own WiFi hotspot that multiple phones, tablets, and laptops can all connect to at once. Use code ADAMANDLINDS for 10% off. The downside is you're carrying another device that needs charging. For most travellers an eSIM is the cleaner solution; pocket WiFi makes sense for large groups or heavy multi-device setups.

Our honest take after 220+ days in Japan

We've done Japan in every configuration: short trips, month-long stays, multi-city Shinkansen routes, rural onsen towns, theme parks. The connectivity need is constant. When we first arrived in Tokyo in October 2022 after Japan reopened its borders, we were already on Holafly and it just worked — no setup drama at the airport, no hunting for a SIM card vending machine. We've been on it for every Japan trip since, including our current stint in Osaka.

The unlimited data is what keeps us loyal. With three kids who all want to look things up, translate signs, and watch videos on long Shinkansen rides, a capped plan would have us constantly anxious about usage. Japan is a country where you're navigating, translating, and booking things on the fly constantly — it's not a destination where you can be stingy with data. The Holafly Japan plan handles all of that without a second thought.

FAQ

Japan eSIM

Does Holafly work in Japan?

Yes. Holafly's Japan eSIM works across Japan on the major domestic networks including NTT Docomo and SoftBank. Coverage is excellent in cities and strong in rural areas. Activate data roaming on the eSIM when you land and you're connected immediately.

What is the best eSIM for Japan?

Holafly is our recommendation for most travellers visiting Japan because it offers unlimited data at competitive per-day pricing. Japan is a high-data-use destination — translation apps, navigation, transit apps, and entertainment on Shinkansen rides all consume data quickly, so unlimited plans offer better value than capped alternatives. Use code ADAMANDLINDS to save 5%.

Is an eSIM better than pocket WiFi for Japan?

For most travellers, yes. An eSIM like Holafly installs in minutes via QR code, requires no pickup or return, and adds no extra device to carry and charge. Pocket WiFi is a better option if you need to connect multiple devices simultaneously. Holafly's Plans subscription also offers unlimited hotspot sharing, which covers most multi-device needs.

How do I set up a Holafly eSIM for Japan?

Purchase at holafly.com and you'll receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone's eSIM settings while on WiFi before you travel. When you land in Japan, turn on data roaming for the Holafly eSIM and you're online. The whole process takes less than five minutes.

Can I use Holafly Plans for Japan?

Yes. Holafly Plans is a global monthly subscription that includes Japan. The Light Plan ($49.90/month, 25GB) and Unlimited Plan ($64.90/month) both cover Japan and 160+ other countries on one eSIM installation. Use code ADAMANDLINDS for 10% off Plans subscriptions.

How much data do you need for a trip to Japan?

More than you'd think. Between Google Maps, Google Translate for menus and signs, transit apps, and general browsing, a solo traveller can easily use 2–3GB per day. For a family using multiple devices, the daily total climbs fast. We recommend unlimited plans for Japan specifically.
