We booked two nights at the only hotel on the summit of Ba Na Hills and rode up on the cable car at about half two in the afternoon on 24 June 2026. We came back down at twenty to eleven on the morning of the 26th. That is roughly forty-four hours on top of a mountain that most people see in six.
Harper turned seven on the middle day and had picked the mountain herself. What follows is what the two nights cost, what the overnight actually buys you that a day trip cannot, and the one window we paid for and then slept through.
What two nights actually cost
We booked on 9 June 2026 through hotels.com, about two weeks ahead. Two nights in one room came to $336.10 before tax, $45.03 in tax, for a total of $381.13. That works out at roughly $190 a night once tax is in, which is several times what a good beach hotel costs down in Da Nang.
The number that makes it defensible is the entry ticket. Since January 2026 the standard Ba Na Hills ticket is valid across up to three consecutive days with unlimited cable car rides in that window, so a two-night stay uses one ticket rather than three. If you were planning to visit the mountain twice anyway, the second and third days cost you nothing at the gate.

The Mercure Danang French Village Bana Hills sits inside the park in the French Village, and there is no road to it. You take the same cable car as every day visitor, which means the hotel runs on the cable car timetable rather than its own.
Two things follow from that. Reception wants you up the mountain by late afternoon, because the guest cable car stops running up, so a late arrival from the airport does not work. In the other direction, guests skip the ticket queue at the base station, which on a busy morning is the difference between walking on and standing in the sun for forty minutes.
Pack an overnight bag and leave the rest of your luggage in Da Nang. Everything you bring goes up the mountain in a gondola with you, and the hotel is a walk from the cable car station at the other end. Our Da Nang cost breakdown covers what we pay for a long-stay apartment down in the city.
The first evening, once the cable car stops bringing people
Sun World runs on cable car hours. Everyone arrives on it and everyone leaves on it, and the crowd at the summit rises and falls on that timetable. By six the plaza had visibly thinned. By seven it was a different place.
What was running while we were there was Ba Na Sun Fest 2026, with the Sun KraftBeer Festival at its centre: long wooden tables, Korean banners strung overhead, sausage plates, and a lit marquee stage that nobody was using. Our two got up on it and danced in front of a sign reading Craft Beer Fest at quarter past seven, which was not on anyone's itinerary. The festival programme rotates through the year, so yours will be something else, but the pattern holds. The summit puts on evening entertainment for the people who are still there, and most of the people who paid to get in have already gone.
Before the festival started we had already done the carousel, the royal carriage through the village, and the alpine coaster, all of it in the last hours of the afternoon while the day crowd was heading for the gondolas. That is the part worth understanding about arriving late. You are not losing a day, you are trading the busiest hours for the emptiest ones.
The morning the summit was ours
We were out on the stone terrace at 09:44 the next morning. The photographs from that hour show empty parapets and the Da Nang coast running out into the haze, and two minutes later the girls had the giant pink heart in Le Jardin d'Amour to themselves.
That is the payoff, and we still only collected half of it. Hotel guests get access to early cable car departures toward the Golden Bridge starting just after six in the morning, before the day buses reach the base station. We slept through that window on both mornings, which is the single thing I would change.
The early cable car times move around and the published schedules disagree with each other. Ask reception when you check in rather than trusting anything you read in advance, including this.
Birthday cake at 1,487 metres
The hotel put a pink heart cake with a number seven candle on a terrace table at ten past one, with the ridgeline behind it. This is the kind of thing that only works because you are staying there, since a day visitor is either eating in a buffet hall or watching the clock for the last gondola.
Food on the summit is priced for people who cannot leave. Two nights of that adds up, so we ate one dinner at the festival, one at the hotel, and carried snacks for the rest. There is a branch of the French bakery chain Eric Kayser up there with an inflatable sun mascot outside it, which is a sentence that only makes sense once you have seen the place.
Three runs at the alpine coaster
The alpine coaster is a separate ticket from park entry and it was the best few dollars of the trip. Our two rode it at quarter to six on the first evening, again at quarter to twelve the next morning, and a third time at quarter past five that afternoon. On a day trip you get one run if the queue is kind.
It is a one or two seat cart on a metal track with a brake lever you are free to ignore, which both of ours did. There is a height requirement and it has changed before, so check it at the station rather than planning around a number you read online.

We reached the Golden Bridge at 16:23 on the second day. It was shoulder to shoulder in both directions, the walkway is narrow, and you cross at the pace of whoever is in front of you. Every photograph we have from that half hour has strangers in it.
This is worth being blunt about. Staying overnight does not fix the Golden Bridge on its own. It hands you two quiet windows either side of the day crowd, and if you spend both of them somewhere else you will queue alongside everybody who came up for the afternoon, having paid $190 a night for the privilege of being closer to the queue.
The second night was better than the first
By the second evening we knew where things were, and the village after dark is the strongest argument for the room. The castle square is lit, the cobbled lanes between the stone buildings are close to empty, and the hydrangea beds sit under the building lights with nobody photographing them.
Our girls walked those lanes at half seven with nothing to do and nowhere to be, which is not an experience the day ticket sells. It is also cooler up there than in the city, enough that a jacket is worth carrying in June.
The last morning in the rose garden
We spent the final hour before checkout in the rose garden, which on a day trip is the thing you jog past on the way to the cable car. The zodiac statues down one side gave the girls a job, and they each went to find their own sign.
We were on the gondola down by twenty to eleven, past the half-built hotels that are going up across the summit. Whatever you visit will have something under scaffolding and something that was not there the year before.
Stay overnight or do the day trip
Both work. The question is what you are actually trying to get out of the mountain, and whether the room rate buys you enough to justify itself against a night in the city.

The overnight earns its money if you have young kids and the compressed day-trip schedule is the thing that would ruin it, or if the mountain in the evening is the part you actually want. Be realistic about the hotel itself while you decide. The rooms are dated, the air conditioning underperformed, and the summit has been a building site for years with no sign of finishing.
What we would do differently
Set an alarm for the early cable car on at least one of the mornings. That single decision is most of what the room rate is buying, and we bought it twice and used it never.
Beyond that, two nights was one more than we needed. One night with a late afternoon arrival and a six o'clock start the next morning would have collected almost everything the second night gave us, at half the room cost, and still left the whole of the second day on a ticket that was already paid for.

Getting online on the mountain
You need a working phone up there, for the QR code at the cable car gate and for sorting a car at the bottom on the way out. A Vietnamese SIM means a passport and a registration desk in town before you go anywhere.
