The honest downsides
Holafly sponsors our videos. They also give us a commision on orders we send to them. What they don't get is any editorial control at all. It is literally written into our contract with them. Our thoughts and opinons are our own. That being said. Holafly isn't perfect. In a nutshell, its one of the most expensive eSIMs on the market. but as Ive said int he past. we haev tested almost all of them and Holafly performs regually at the top for us. Below are some more specific limitations we have run into ourselves, and there are more in our full write-up on the disadvantages.
- Price. As I said above, its EXPENSIVE. Like often costs two to four times what a local SIM does. We lived in Da Nang for about 6 months and our local plan was only $15 a month. Unlimited and came with a local phone number. I did have to spend an afternoon at the Vietelle store waiting in line haveing all my passport info copied and use google translate to figure it all out.
- Data only on most products. Most of the time you dont get a local number. The one product that you do "The Unlimited Plan" gives you a US, UK, or Canada number, BUT it receives SMS only and cannot make calls or send texts.
- Fair use on unlimited. Unlimited products carry fair-use policies and network management, so speeds can drop after heavy use in some destinations. This is standard copy from Holafly and we have NEVER been cut off. we use a lot of data. Just know that it could happen.
- Hotspot caps. Same as above. we dont rely on hotspot but we have used it a lot. And have never been cut off. But know that it could happen.
- Coverage is the local network's. Holafly uses local networks and while this anecdotal, and I dont have true evidence I feel like the netowrks hobble travel esims morethan their own customers. I have had a lot of issues with Holafly in Vietnam and Thailand. But I have never had an issue with my local SIMs.
- Does not work on carrier locked phones. Not a problem exclusice to holafly, but if your phone is locked to a carrier, you cannot use Holafly. You will need to unlock your phone first.

No Holafly product supports traditional calls. The Unlimited Plan's number receives SMS only, and destination eSIMs have no number at all. Calls work through data apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Google Meet, and calls to your own number still arrive on your physical SIM.
